Destiny

Hey guys, today I'm gonna be writing a post about a theme that features in pretty much every rom-com out there, destiny. As per usual, since this is an opinion piece, I'll give you the dictionary definition of destiny...

destiny
ˈdɛstɪni/
noun
  1. the events that will necessarily happen to a particular person or thing in the future.

"she was unable to control her own destiny"
    • the hidden power believed t

      o c
      ontrol future events; fate

The whole concept of destiny is actually referred to a lot, both in the media and throughout our everyday life. If something goes wrong, we are told that "everything happens for a reason"  or that "it wasn't meant to be".

As for in the media, not only are these phrases used incredibly often (literally once I thought of this post I noticed so many tv shows and movies mentioned destiny ALL THE TIME) but a lot of films actually have destiny as a main theme despite it not being obvious.

For example, imagine a movie where a couple have had a huge fight because one of them messed up. Then one of the characters realise that the other is their soulmate or their destiny and they go and make a grand gesture and win them back. Can you imagine it? Think of a movie that happens in, well everybody is probably thinking of different movies because that happens in 99.9% of rom-coms.

So, for an opinion post this hasn't featured much of my opinion on destiny. Do I believe in destiny? Honestly I don't know. I'm a bit of a romantic so I like to believe that everything in my life is happening for a reason and it will all work out in the end

I guess I'd say I'm somewhere in the middle. I hope that everything will work out and that I do have a destiny but it won't happen without some work from my end. Destiny or not I won't end up as the CEO of multi-million euro company if I sit on my couch all day watching tv. So I guess I hope it is true but I definitely won't be depending on destiny right now.

For those of you who do believe in destiny, if you're looking for a sign THIS IS IT, I really hope whatever you're waiting for works out for you.

  4. This is a very powerful and well written read.
I'm struggling to figure out whether I believe in destiny and the role it can play in one's life.
    One can only hope right?

  5. Destiny is a very interesting concept. I think for me not to be turned off by the idea that it would have to probably play out as you describe. We have to work for it, it's not something that is just handed to us. Also, what does that say about freewill?
